Sir William Rous Unit
  Cancer Unit
A unit just for cancer patients at Kingston Hospital   If you live in the UK you have, on average, a one in three chance of developing cancer at some point in your life. If you do, early diagnosis and prompt treatment will improve the likelihood of you surviving the disease. At Kingston Hospital we have earned a reputation as a major cancer unit. The latest performance indicators show that our survival rates for patients with the three commonest cancers — breast, colorectal and lung — are among the best in the country. We treat up to 2,000 new cancers each year. But more can be done to enhance the facilities and environment, and to expand the range of treatments and follow-up services provided on site.

What is in the unit?

-
  • an outpatient diagnostic clinic where patients with suspected cancer can rapidly have tests and results in an environment away from the hustle and bustle of the outpatient department
  • equipment in the department to enable same-day diagnosis where possible
  • outpatient chemotherapy treatment, avoiding the need for patients to travel to cancer centres some distance away
  • a patient information library service which will enable patients and their health professionals to access up-to-date information, both in written form and via the internet
  • access to support services such as counselling and complementary therapies
  • a seminar room for education and support meetings
  • easy access to support from their health professionals

Sir William Rous

Why is the unit be called after Sir William Rous?

Sir William Rous was Chairman of Kingston Hospital from December 1996 until his death from cancer in May 1999. The Board of Kingston Hospital decided to commemorate the tremendous service given by Sir William to the hospital by naming the cancer unit after him.

During his long army career, Willie Rous placed the well-being of his soldiers before anything else. As Chairman of Kingston Hospital, he was very committed to the improvement of services, and his experience as a cancer patient led him to contemplate changes that could be made to provide better cancer services.

The Sir William Rous Unit will not only give patients the best medical facilities but also the high quality support services that are part of the caring process.

Lady Rous is delighted by the plans for a lasting tribute to her husband and is playing an active role in the fundraising campaign and design of the unit. She says 'Nothing will make cancer good but there are things which can make it less bad.'

Where is it?

The unit is built at the eastern side of the Kingston Hospital site, in front of Outpatients and the old Accident & Emergency department.
